Washington Commons is a longtime Prospect Heights bar that leans into a mix of old-school neighborhood charm and a slightly worn, divey character. Nestled on Washington Avenue, it offers a dim, candlelit indoor space with varied seating that swings between funky and romantic. This makes it a solid spot for those who want a low-key evening with a touch of intimate ambiance, especially after dark when the lighting and atmosphere feel more inviting.

The beer selection is a highlight here, with a broad range from local craft drafts like Avery’s Passionfruit Wheat and Breakside IPA to classic options such as Guinness and Allagash White. There’s also a strong whiskey and cocktail presence, including staples like Negronis and Irish coffees, catering to drinkers who know what they want beyond basic bar fare. The bar’s stocked well enough to satisfy fans of both quality cocktails and straightforward pints.

While the indoor vibe pulls you in, the outdoor area—an expansive backyard garden—is a mixed bag. It's large and airy but shows signs of wear, with some seating broken or less comfortable, which can make it less appealing in nicer weather. Despite this, it’s still an asset for those who want a breath of fresh air with their drinks, especially in the warmer months. However, do note that this spot doesn’t allow dogs, which might be a consideration for pet owners.

Washington Commons feels best for people who appreciate a relaxed, unpretentious hangout where the focus is on drinks and conversation rather than food or flashy service. It attracts a local crowd that values familiarity and straightforward pricing—happy hours with affordable cocktails add to its casual draw. The bartenders are known to be friendly and capable of running the place efficiently, even when busy.

Overall, if you’re in Prospect Heights looking for a bar that’s more about atmosphere and solid beverages than polish, Washington Commons delivers. It’s a place for evenings when you want to settle into a cozy corner and riff with friends over well-poured beers or classic cocktails, all under the watchful character of Brooklyn grit and history.

This spot is a fun neighborhood hang! Cocktails were only $12! While the outdoor spaces could use some TLC and weren’t necessarily inviting, the indoor space was funky and romantic. Dark, candlelit and with different seating options.

This bar has been in the neighborhood a long time. The happy hour deal is good. Otherwise, I don't really hang out there because it's in a rather decrepit state. For example, half of of the benches in the backyard are broken. Solid option if you happen to visit when they have good beers on tap.

While the neighborhood changes all around, there are there is Washington Commons there for the dark cozy win. Friendly bartenders, nice cocktails, a fine beer selection. Gotta like the nice cool glass windows, the deep back - there’s a garden, too, right? It’s old school, a good neighborhood mix, unpretentious. Divey in spots, in the good way - and some notes of hip and elegant, too.

Great place ! Was surprised to find alchemist beer in there. They also have a nice large back area . Only thing I didn't like is that they don't allow dogs .

Had a great time with friends recently. Quaint ale house in Prospect Heights. No frills. No food. Extensive beer list and bar fully stocked with top shelf options. We were served by KiKi, who ran the entire operations seamlessly — BY HERSELF! Would definitely return for more laughs, great convo over great beers!

Huge bar design. Could fit 4 or 5 bartenders. Kinda slow since they have to go all the way over there to close your tab. Great atmosphere. Garden space.
